A 33-year-old man, Ioan Pintaru, has been handed an indefinite detention order in a high-security psychiatric hospital following a violent knife attack on an 11-year-old girl in London’s West End. The victim, now 13, was an Australian tourist visiting Leicester Square with her mother when the assault occurred on 12 August 2024. Pintaru, a Romanian national, admitted to charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife but was not tried for attempted murder due to evidence that his psychosis at the time prevented proof of intent to kill.
During the sentencing at the Old Bailey, details emerged of the terrifying moment when the girl was attacked as she left a Lego store, where she had been picking out gifts.
