Wales weather warning for Sunday and Monday amid flood risk

Wales is bracing for a period of heavy rainfall, with multiple weather warnings issued for Sunday and Monday amid concerns over flooding and travel disruption. Among these warnings is an amber alert signaling a “possible risk to life,” as intense rain threatens to worsen conditions already impacted by recent storms. The Met Office has identified areas across north, mid, and south Wales at risk, following significant flooding caused by Storm Bram and severe damage in Monmouth linked to Storm Claudia.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has specifically urged residents in southern parts of the country to prepare for possible substantial flooding, particularly overnight. At present, there is one active flood warning and 35 flood alerts covering various regions. The Met Office highlighted that the wet weather in recent weeks has left the ground saturated, increasing the potential for further impacts. They warned that places such as Dolgellau in Gwynedd are also at risk of flooding during this period.

Forecasters predict that over the next 24 to 36 hours, heavy rain will affect much of western Wales, potentially delivering over 100mm (4 inches) in some upland areas. The Met Office spokesperson noted, “In south and west Wales we could see another 100mm (4in) of rain falling in the next 24 hours or so, and that’s falling on saturated ground.” With November and early December already experiencing exceptionally wet conditions, the authorities are cautioning that travel may be disrupted and homes or businesses could face flooding.

To manage the risks, NRW continues to work closely with the Flood Forecasting Centre, emergency services, and local councils, keeping a close watch on evolving weather patterns and rainfall forecasts. Sally Davies, NRW’s duty tactical manager, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We’re urging people to be vigilant and to make preparations for potential flooding now. If flooding is possible in your area, think about preparing a flood kit with any important documents and medication, moving your car to higher ground and moving treasured possessions upstairs or to a higher place.
