Police investigating historical allegations of child abuse at two former NHS mental health units in West Sussex have reported speaking to 12 individuals claiming to be victims, with suspicions that more may come forward. These facilities—Larchwood and Colwood in Haywards Heath—operated during the 1970s through to the 1990s before closing by the early 2000s. The units provided inpatient therapy and education to vulnerable children, many of whom were neurodiverse or suffering from mental health conditions. Larchwood accommodated younger children, while adolescents were cared for at Colwood; both were situated on the site of the former St Francis Hospital, near the current Princess Royal Hospital.
