The Met Office has downgraded its amber weather warning for heavy rain and potential flooding in south-west Scotland, which had been issued earlier as a severe band of rainfall approached the area. Although the anticipated volume of rain failed to materialize at the predicted intensity, a yellow warning remains active throughout much of western Scotland. Forecasters continue to expect heavy localized downpours, keeping the risk of flooding and travel disruption present.
In Inverclyde, significant flooding has impacted transportation, leading to the closure of the A78 road in Greenock. This route, which connects Greenock with Inverkip, remains shut in both directions due to water covering the carriageway following overnight rainfall. Traffic Scotland has redirected vehicles along an alternative coastal road through Gourock to ease congestion and maintain safety.
Elsewhere, the A83 Rest and Be Thankful area in Argyll, known for its susceptibility to landslides, is under additional caution. Traffic is being channeled through the Old Military Road diversion, with inspectors scheduled to examine the hillside on Monday to prevent further hazards. In anticipation of the earlier amber warning, ScotRail also cancelled train services between Kilmarnock and Dumfries to reduce risk to passengers.
The yellow rain warning currently extends across western Scotland and reaches as far north as the Highlands, including Skye and the Inner Hebrides. In Dumfries and Galloway, local forecasts predict up to 100mm (4 inches) of rainfall over the weekend, with a further 20-30mm expected on Sunday before conditions improve early Monday.
