A woman named Sarah, whose identity has been changed to protect her privacy, revealed the traumatic experience she endured when she was sexually groomed and assaulted as a teenager. At just 14 years old, she met a man in a park in Gateshead who initially seemed friendly but soon took advantage of a moment when she was vulnerable after drinking alcohol. “He waited to a point where I’d consumed alcohol and I was completely vulnerable – and that was the first time that he did something,” Sarah recounted. This man was part of a group of five men involved in grooming vulnerable children in Saltwell Park, offering them alcohol and drugs before committing acts of abuse.
Between 2015 and 2019, this group preyed on six girls, including Sarah, exploiting and assaulting them. The authorities arrested and prosecuted the men, who were sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court last Friday for multiple offences ranging from sexual assault to rape.
