The Times Scotland editor suspended over indecent communications charge

David McCann, the editor of The Times and The Sunday Times in Scotland, has been suspended following charges related to indecent online communications. News UK, the owner of the newspapers, confirmed that the 43-year-old is involved in a criminal investigation that is not connected to his professional duties.

On November 25, Police Scotland conducted a search at an Edinburgh property and subsequently arrested McCann. The very next day, he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, where he chose not to enter a plea. He was granted bail pending further investigations.

McCann was appointed as the Scottish editor of The Times in August, succeeding Magnus Llewellin. His career at the paper began in 2018 as news editor before he advanced to deputy editor in 2019. Prior to his time at The Times, he held several positions including assistant editor and head of news at The Herald, assistant news editor at the Daily Record, and various roles at the Edinburgh Evening News.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated, “Officers executed a search warrant at a property in the Edinburgh area. A 43-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with indecent online communications.” Meanwhile, News UK remarked, “We have been informed that David McCann, editor of The Times and The Sunday Times in Scotland, has been made the subject of a criminal investigation unrelated to his work. He has been suspended from the business. We will not be making any further comment at this time.
