More than 600 artefacts of considerable cultural importance were taken from the archive of Bristol Museum in a high-value burglary, according to police reports. The robbery occurred in the early hours of 25 September, when four men broke into a building located in the Cumberland Basin area of Bristol.
The stolen items belonged to the museum’s British Empire and Commonwealth collection, and investigators are currently attempting to identify the suspects captured on CCTV footage in the vicinity. Detective Constable Dan Burgan emphasized the significance of the loss, stating, “The theft of many items which carry a significant cultural value is a significant loss for the city.”
Many of the artefacts were donated and are part of a collection that sheds light on a complex aspect of British history. DC Burgan expressed hope that public assistance would help bring those responsible to justice. “So far, our enquiries have included significant CCTV enquiries as well as forensic investigations and speaking liaising with the victims,” he added.
The police are appealing to anyone who might recognize the four white men shown on the CCTV images or who may have come across possibly stolen items being offered for sale online. The suspects are described as follows: the first individual is of medium to stocky build and wore a white cap, black jacket, light trousers, and black trainers; the second appears slim, clad in a grey hooded jacket, black trousers, and black trainers; the third wore a green cap, black jacket, light shorts, and white trainers and seemed to have a slight limp in his right leg; the fourth, of large build, wore a two-toned orange and navy or black puffy jacket, black trousers, and black and white trainers
