Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has expressed serious concerns about the US president’s recently released national security strategy, labeling it as “deeply alarming.” This new policy document, unveiled last week, contains strong warnings that Europe faces the risk of “civilisational erasure” and suggests that US efforts should focus on fostering resistance to the current direction Europe is heading. Sir Ed has called on the UK Prime Minister to firmly oppose any attempts by President Trump to meddle in British democracy, emphasizing the need for clear boundaries.
The US strategy places significant emphasis on ending mass migration, criticizing European approaches to migration which it claims have caused societal tensions. It also addresses issues such as “censorship of free speech” and a decline in national identities and confidence among European nations. One notable passage questions whether some European countries will maintain economies and military strength sufficient to be dependable allies. In a recent Politico interview, President Trump intensified his criticism of European leaders, labeling them as “weak” for their failure to control migration and to bring the war in Ukraine to a close. The document also takes a relatively softer stance toward Russia, accusing the European Union of obstructing US efforts to resolve the conflict and stressing the importance of “re-establishing strategic stability with Russia.” Moscow has responded positively, describing the strategy as largely in line with its own views.
During Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons, Sir Ed Davey raised this US document, pointing out the irony of President Trump condemning others for undermining democratic principles while promoting far-right narratives and threatening to support resistance movements in Europe. He asked the Prime Minister whether he would directly communicate with Trump to make it clear that interference in UK democracy would be unacceptable. In reply, Sir Keir Starmer steered away from direct criticism of President Trump, instead affirming his commitment to defending Europe’s enduring values of freedom and democracy. Sir Ed retorted by noting that he had not heard any indication of standing up to Trump. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has worked on fostering a strong relationship with Trump, highlighting a recent trade agreement as a positive outcome of this engagement.
Separately, Downing Street has come to the defense of London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan after President Trump described him as a “disaster” and “incompetent” during the same Politico interview. Trump attributed Khan’s election to the large number of immigrants in London. In response, the Prime Minister’s press secretary condemned Trump’s remarks as “wrong” and praised the mayor’s performance, expressing pride in their working relationship. This development follows a recent incident when Downing Street was criticized for not clearly defending Sir Sadiq against Trump’s attacks, with a spokesman opting to emphasize the Prime Minister’s strong ties with both the US president and the London mayor, prioritizing cooperative efforts for the benefit of the country
