Storm Bram has started to affect Scotland, causing significant travel disruptions as ferries are cancelled and train services are altered. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for strong winds across north-west Scotland, effective from 4 pm until midnight, with gusts reaching up to 90 mph. Earlier in the day, the storm has already brought heavy rainfall and high winds to other parts of the country.
In response to the weather conditions, ScotRail announced that certain services in the northwest, including the West Highland Line between Fort William and Mallaig and routes from Kyle of Lochalsh, will end earlier than scheduled. Other trains across the northeast, central, and southern regions are expected to experience delays and speed restrictions. Meanwhile, CalMac has alerted passengers of disruptions across many of its ferry routes along the west coast, with some sailings cancelled entirely. Ferry operators P&O Ferries and Stena Line have also had to cancel several sailings between Cairnryan and Northern Ireland due to the forecasted strong winds. Travelers to Cairnryan have been advised to avoid the area as delays are anticipated.
Named by Ireland’s Met Éireann as the second major storm this season, Storm Bram follows on the heels of Storm Amy, which struck Scotland in October and led to widespread power outages and travel disturbances. The ongoing storm is prompting concerns not only for transport but also for infrastructure, with the Met Office issuing multiple yellow warnings for wind across all regions of Scotland on Tuesday and Wednesday. The potential impact includes power cuts, flooding, and disruption to road, rail, air, and ferry transport services.

These warnings highlight the risk of coastal flooding on Tuesday due to the convergence of strong winds, a storm surge, and spring tides. Additionally, heavy and persistent rain may lead to localized flooding from smaller rivers and surface water accumulation, exacerbating the challenges posed by the storm
