Wrexham agree new investment deal for minority stake

Apollo Sports Capital (ASC), recently confirmed as the minority investors in Wrexham football club, have emerged as the new owners of Atletico Madrid. Last month, ASC secured majority ownership of the Spanish football powerhouse, with the agreement expected to be finalized early next year.

Alongside their stake in Atletico Madrid, ASC has chosen to invest in Wrexham, where actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney continue to maintain controlling ownership. Although specific details about the investment or the exact percentage of shares acquired by ASC have not been disclosed, sources suggest that their holding is likely below 10%. This financial boost will also assist in advancing the development of Wrexham’s home stadium, the Racecourse Ground.

Reynolds and McElhenney expressed optimism about the collaboration in a joint statement, highlighting their ambition for the club’s future. “The dream has always been to take this club to the Premier League while staying true to the town,” they said. “Growth like that takes world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo absolutely does.”

Al Tylis, ASC’s chief executive, has prior connections with Reynolds and McElhenney through other ventures, including a minor stake in Mexican football club Necaxa. Appointed in September as part of Apollo’s larger strategy to expand into sports, Tylis leads efforts within a company managing assets exceeding $900 billion (£675 billion), with a commitment to invest $5 billion (£3.75 billion) in sports globally. This latest involvement marks the second time Reynolds and McElhenney have welcomed minority investors into Wrexham since their 2021 takeover, the previous being the Allyn Family’s acquisition of around 15% of the club in October 2024. ASC’s chief strategy officer, Sam Porter, also adds sports industry experience as a former director at Swansea City
