Man charged with murder of Essex student stabbed in Southampton

An individual has been formally charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a university student in Southampton. The victim, Henry Nowak, aged 18 and originally from Chafford Hundred, Essex, was found late in the evening on December 3rd on Belmont Road with multiple stab wounds. Despite efforts to save him, Mr. Nowak was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed that 22-year-old Vickrum Digwa, residing on St Denys Road in Southampton, faces charges of murder as well as possession of a bladed weapon in a public area. Alongside these charges, 52-year-old Kiran Kaur, also from St Denys Road, has been charged with assisting an offender. Both Digwa and Kaur are scheduled to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court.

Additional developments in the investigation include the release of two other individuals. A 51-year-old man, initially arrested on suspicion of murder, has been released on police bail while inquiries continue. Similarly, a 26-year-old man formerly detained on suspicion of murder was released without further action regarding that offence but remains on bail concerning allegations of assisting an offender and a public order violation.

Henry Nowak’s family shared heartfelt sentiments following the tragedy, emphasizing the promising life and opportunities that lay ahead for him. They expressed their profound grief, stating, “Our hearts ache when we think of the bright future he had ahead of him, full of opportunity and adventures.” The University of Southampton also issued a statement through Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Smith, who spoke of shock and sorrow over the loss and highlighted that support was being provided to the university community.
