On Wednesday night, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck northwest England, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS). The seismic event occurred shortly after 11:23 pm and was noticeable throughout Lancashire and the southern Lake District. Towns such as Kendal and Ulverston, located within approximately 12 miles of the quake’s epicenter, experienced the tremor.
The earthquake’s epicenter was just off the coast of Silverdale, Lancashire, occurring at a depth of around 1.86 miles. Despite the earthquake’s intensity, there have been no immediate reports of structural damage. Local residents described the event to the BGS, with some saying it “felt like an underground explosion” and others noting it was “so powerful it shook the whole house.”
Authorities in the region responded quickly to the event. The Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that many people in the Carnforth area, roughly 18 miles north of Lancaster, experienced the earthquake and reported hearing a loud bang. Similarly, Lancaster police received multiple reports of an explosive sound in the vicinity. The police stated, “There have been no reports of anyone injured or damage caused but we have officers in the area, together with colleagues from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service.”
The earthquake also generated significant public attention online. The Volcano Discovery website recorded more than 1,000 reports about the incident, with some reports coming from as far away as Blackpool. Residents shared their reactions, with one Carnforth resident describing a “rumbling sound which intensified into a loud bang” and a Silverdale resident mentioning a “loud rumble and rattling of fixtures in house, as though something had collapsed or the chimney had fallen off.” On average, the BGS monitors roughly 300 earthquakes annually across the UK, but only about 10% of these are perceptible to people
