A crystal Fabergé egg, lavishly adorned with diamonds and once part of Russia’s imperial collection, has been sold in London for a staggering £22.9 million ($30.2 million). Known as the Winter Egg, this exquisite masterpiece is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful works created by the famous jeweller. The buyer, whose identity remains confidential, secured the piece during an auction held by Christie’s on Tuesday.
Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II in 1913 as a gift for his mother, the Winter Egg is embellished with an impressive 4,500 diamonds. Prior to this sale, the highest price ever paid at auction for a Fabergé egg stood at £8.9 million, a record set in 2007. The house of Fabergé produced only 50 eggs for the Russian Romanov family, and this particular egg now holds the distinction of achieving a new auction world record.
The egg stands 8.2 centimeters (3.2 inches) tall and was crafted by Carl Fabergé, following a design by Alma Theresia Pihl, notable as one of just two female workmasters at the St. Petersburg jewellery firm. It features a delicate combination of materials, including rock crystal, rose-cut diamonds, and platinum snowflake motifs. Upon opening, the egg reveals a miniature basket filled with white quartz flowers, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship involved.
Only seven Fabergé eggs remain in private ownership today, with others accounted for in museums or missing entirely. These remarkable objects were created between 1885 and 1917, ceasing production following Tsar Nicholas II’s abdication.
