Teenage girl dies in minibus crash near Tadcaster Grammar School

A tragic accident in North Yorkshire has resulted in the death of a teenage girl and left another seriously injured. The incident occurred when a minibus and a car collided on Toulston Lane, close to Tadcaster Grammar School. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 12:30 GMT following reports of a crash involving a white Mercedes Sprinter minibus and a Hyundai i10.

At the time of the collision, the minibus was carrying nine passengers aged between 16 and 18, in addition to the driver. North Yorkshire Police confirmed that the driver of the Hyundai, a 40-year-old woman, has been taken into custody as part of the investigation. Other passengers from the minibus and the driver sustained minor injuries and were treated in hospital.

According to police statements, the minibus was traveling towards Sherburn when the light-colored Hyundai entered Toulston Lane from Rudgate. Authorities have closed Toulston Lane indefinitely while inquiries are ongoing. In light of the incident, Tadcaster Grammar School informed parents that the school would remain closed on Tuesday since the premises were deemed unsafe for students.

Sir Alec Sherbrook, the MP for Wetherby & Easingwold, described the news as “desperately sad” and extended his thoughts and prayers to the families affected. BBC Look North reporter Olivia Richwald, present at the scene, described a significant police presence with a cordon spanning three nearby roads. She noted the presence of two vehicles behind the barriers: a small pale car with visible front bumper damage and a larger vehicle, likely the minibus, partially obscured behind a tarpaulin. The area remained quiet with minimal traffic. Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with footage of the accident to come forward to assist with the investigation
