Searches for Newport rugby player missing in Romanian mountains

Efforts to locate a British man who vanished while hiking in the Romanian mountains have been ongoing for over a week. George Smyth, a student at the University of Bristol originally from Shropshire, has been missing since November 23 in the Bucegi Mountains. Despite continuous search operations coordinated by the Brașov Mountain Rescue team, no sign of him has yet been found.

Mr. Smyth is thought to have started his trek from Poiana Brașov, making his way toward Bran, the location famously associated with Count Dracula’s castle. During his hike, he reached Tiganesti, where he reportedly called for assistance through the 112 emergency number. His disappearance has caused significant concern among those who know him, especially his local rugby club in Newport, Shropshire.

The Newport rugby club, where Smyth developed from the junior ranks and was a valued member, expressed their deep worry regarding his disappearance. The club highlighted that Smyth often dedicated his time to coaching younger players and was integrated into their rugby family. “This news has touched all of us,” the club stated, expressing hope that the search efforts underway in Romania will bring about positive news. The club also requested that everyone keep George and his family in their thoughts.

Meanwhile, the University of Bristol confirmed they are aware of the situation and are maintaining close contact with Smyth’s family, emphasizing their concern for his safety. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office similarly confirmed that they are assisting his family and liaising with Romanian authorities. The mountain rescue service has encouraged anyone with information about Smyth’s whereabouts to come forward and report to either the rescue service or the nearest police station, as the search continues into its second week
