A tragic accident near Tadcaster Grammar School has resulted in the death of a teenage girl, an event that local officials have described as deeply heartbreaking. The incident involved a minibus carrying nine passengers between the ages of 16 and 18, which collided with a Hyundai i10 shortly before 12:30 GMT on Monday. The collision occurred near the school, and police confirmed the girl died at the scene.
Kirsty Poskitt, a councillor for Tadcaster on North Yorkshire Council, called the loss an “unimaginable tragedy.” She extended her sympathies to the young people involved and the family of the deceased, expressing how devastating it is when a life ends so prematurely. The minibus, a white Mercedes Sprinter, appeared to have tipped onto its side and was removed from the scene overnight, though the road remains closed as investigations proceed. Police have arrested a 40-year-old woman in connection with the crash.
According to North Yorkshire Police, the minibus was traveling towards Sherburn when the Hyundai entered Toulston Lane from the Rudgate junction, leading to the collision. Another teenage girl, seriously injured but not in a life-threatening condition, was taken to hospital by ambulance. The remaining passengers and the driver of the minibus sustained minor injuries and were also treated in hospital.
Local community members responded with sorrow and concern. Hayley Allan, a youth worker in Tadcaster, said she witnessed the aftermath shortly after the crash, describing the scene as heartbreaking. Reverend Ann Fox from Tadcaster Methodist Church announced that the church would be open for prayer in the morning following the news, offering condolences to those affected. Meanwhile, the school closed on Tuesday due to safety concerns, and the police have urged any witnesses or those with dashcam footage to come forward as part of their ongoing investigation
