New party founded by Corbyn adopts Your Party as name

A newly established left-wing political party, created by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, has officially voted to adopt the name Your Party, which had been serving as a temporary title since the party’s inception. Since its launch in July, the party used the slogan “This is Your Party,” allowing its membership to choose the permanent name from a shortlist of four options at the founding conference held in Liverpool. The options included Your Party, Our Party, Popular Alliance, and For the Many—the latter being a former Labour Party slogan linked to Corbyn’s leadership.

Instead of appointing a traditional single leader, the party members opted for a leadership structure driven by ordinary members rather than one individual. This approach bypasses a potentially contentious leadership contest, particularly between Corbyn and Sultana. A party spokesperson emphasized that the chosen name reflects the group’s mission to “transfer wealth and power from the few to the many.” The spokesman stated, “It was Your Party all along,” and described the weekend’s event as “a festival of democracy, breaking with the Westminster mould of top-down politics,” promising voters a “genuinely new kind of politics.”

Members had originally been invited to submit name suggestions, which were narrowed down to the final four, with Your Party receiving over 37% of the votes. Interestingly, Sultana’s favored name, The Left Party, was excluded from the options based on guidance from the Electoral Commission. The party further decided to be governed by a Central Executive Committee (CEC) consisting of 16 elected non-politicians, promoting a more democratic and grassroots structure. The proposal passed with 51% support, preempting a leadership race expected to develop between the two key figures and avoiding internal divisions at a delicate time for the young party.

Since the party’s surprise announcement in July, Sultana has had repeated clashes with party officials. Tensions escalated when MPs Adnan Hussain and Iqbal Mohamed resigned from the oversight team just weeks before the founding conference, citing a “toxic culture,” particularly impacting Muslim men. Both MPs later signed a letter criticizing Sultana for the delay in transferring approximately £800,000 linked to Your Party donations, held by a company she controls. According to reports, Sultana has transferred £600,000 so far and pledged to complete the remaining payments “as soon as possible, as the legal details are ironed out.” Sultana boycotted the conference’s opening day in protest against the expulsion of members who retained memberships in other left-wing organizations such as the Socialist Workers Party. On the following day, the membership approved the policy of allowing dual memberships moving forward, aligning with Sultana’s preference.

The newly formed Central Executive Committee will have the authority to exclude groups that conflict with Your Party’s values and will oversee strategic decisions, staffing, and resource allocation. A “democratic whip” system will empower the CEC to guide MPs to vote according to party policy on key issues, with local branches responsible for deciding penalties if rules are broken. The selection of candidates for next year’s local elections will be managed by the Independent Alliance of MPs, composed of Corbyn, Ayoub Khan, and Shockat Adam, in collaboration with a members’ oversight committee formed by randomly chosen members. It remains uncertain if Zarah Sultana will participate in the candidate selection process under the new party framework
