The family of Kory Russell, a 25-year-old man who tragically died after collapsing at the finish line of the Royal Parks Half Marathon in London, has described him as the “best son and brother anyone could ask for.” Kory, from Sully in the Vale of Glamorgan, collapsed while completing the race in Hyde Park on 12 October. Despite receiving advanced medical care at the scene and being transported to hospital, he sadly passed away later.
Kory’s parents, Matt and Rhi Russell, emphasized that he had been in good health and had maintained a consistent training routine leading up to the event. They spoke of his kind and caring personality, recalling his infectious smile which they said “would light up a room.” They shared, “More often than not he would be smiling at every opportunity. I think that’s what we would like him to be remembered for most.”
Having graduated from Loughborough University, Kory lived and worked in London where he pursued his passion for cooking. He had experience working in a Michelin-starred restaurant in Penarth and was known to be driven and hardworking. The family also highlighted his pride in his Welsh heritage; he and his siblings were fluent Welsh speakers and Kory was an active participant in cultural events such as the Eisteddfod.
Kory’s funeral was held at Llandaff Cathedral and featured heartfelt tributes including a song composed by his brother Iosi. Friends and musicians performed in his memory, such as Manon Ogwen Parry, the Pendyrus Male Voice Choir, and the Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg school choir. A bilingual poem penned by his school friend Brennig Davies was read, and special recorded messages and songs from performers associated with Paddington The Musical and Welsh artists, including Lucie Jones and Dafydd Iwan, were shared.
Before his passing, Kory had been an active athlete from a young age, taking part in 5km runs and swimming for the City of Cardiff Swimming Club. His mother recalled how he was eagerly anticipating running the half marathon with his loved ones cheering him on. She described the sudden tragedy: “We think his heart stopped after going into cardiac arrest… We went from cheering him on, to him falling unconscious and being taken to the medical tent where at one stage he had 26 medical professionals trying to save his life.”
Although Kory was rushed to hospital by ambulance, he was unable to be saved. His parents expressed deep gratitude to the paramedics, doctors, and race organizers for their tireless efforts and support during the crisis. Matt Russell said, “We witnessed first-hand the medical expertise of the paramedics and doctors and know that they did everything they could for Kory.” Many participants and the event team have since reached out to offer condolences to the family. The exact cause of Kory’s death has not yet been determined
