A midwife from Manchester is currently on life support in Barbados after falling seriously ill just days into what was meant to be a celebratory holiday. Alison Phillips, aged 60, who has worked at North Manchester hospital for three decades, traveled to the Caribbean island with five friends on November 2nd to mark her 60th birthday. Unfortunately, she developed symptoms of a chest infection on the very first day of the trip.
Despite receiving antibiotics at a local medical centre, Alison’s condition deteriorated. By the third day, her friends rushed her to the Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital in Bridgetown, where she was admitted to intensive care diagnosed with advanced pneumonia and sepsis. Following this, Alison was placed into an induced coma for over two weeks. Recently, she opened her eyes and has shown some limited responsiveness, though she remains heavily sedated and “not very compos mentis,” according to her daughter Abigail Phillips.
Alison’s family faces further uncertainty as she currently cannot be transported back to the UK. She is on full ventilation and would require a tracheotomy before being able to fly, likely necessitating a three-stop air ambulance journey. The family has been informed that the air ambulance could cost upwards of £140,000, and it remains unclear if the insurance will cover this expense. Abigail, who is 25 weeks pregnant herself and unable to travel, expressed the emotional strain this situation has created: “I just want to hug my mum. Her granddaughter is so upset, she just wants her nanny back.”
Abigail’s older brother Antony has been by Alison’s bedside in Barbados throughout the ordeal, providing vital support during this difficult time. “Thank goodness my brother has been able to be there,” Abigail said. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without him.” She also reflected on their mother’s selfless dedication to others over her career, saying, “My mum has dedicated more than 30 years to caring for mothers, babies, and families with compassion and strength. And now, she urgently needs that same love and support in return.”
