Authorities are currently engaged in efforts to locate a British man who went overboard from a cruise ship near Tenerife. The Spanish coastguard began coordinating the search and rescue operations at 09:48 local time (09:48 GMT) on Thursday for the 76-year-old individual. The incident took place aboard the Marella Explorer 2, a vessel managed by TUI, positioned just northwest of Tenerife at the time.
According to TUI’s Marella Cruises, the man was observed entering the water while the ship was en route to La Gomera. The company has expressed that it is providing support to the family of the missing passenger and is collaborating closely with local authorities. The coastguard noted in their announcement that the ship took part in the search efforts until it arrived in Santa Cruz de Tenerife during the early morning hours of Friday.
The search operation has involved multiple resources, including rescue boats, two helicopters, and a dedicated search and rescue aircraft deployed to the vicinity. Local news sources report that the vessel was returning to the Canary Islands from Madeira when this event occurred. The Marella Explorer 2 had reportedly left Tenerife on 21 November, embarking on a week-long cruise around the Canary Islands and adjacent locations.
