Man, 31, arrested over Manchester synagogue attack

Greater Manchester Police have announced the arrest of a man at Manchester Airport on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses connected to the synagogue attack in the city earlier this year. The attack, which took place on October 2 at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, resulted in the deaths of Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz. Additionally, three other men received treatment for serious injuries following the incident.

The individual detained is a 31-year-old man who was apprehended after arriving on a flight into Manchester. He faces accusations related to the commission, preparation, and instigation of terrorist acts. This arrest marks the seventh person taken into custody in connection with the synagogue attack. Previously, five suspects were released without charge, while a separate 30-year-old individual, arrested on October 9 on suspicion of failing to disclose information linked to terrorism, remains on bail.

During the recent inquest proceedings at Manchester Coroner’s Court, details emerged about the sequence of events on the day of the attack. It was revealed that Jihad Al-Shamie drove his vehicle into a security guard stationed outside the synagogue as attendees were gathering for Yom Kippur. He then exited his vehicle and assaulted Melvin Cravitz with a knife. Inside the synagogue, congregants, including Adrian Daulby, managed to close and barricade the doors, preventing Al-Shamie from entering despite his attempts to break through. Armed police officers intervened by opening fire on Al-Shamie, but tragically, a stray bullet went through the synagogue door and struck Daulby, causing his death.
