This Christmas, Liverpool’s libraries are gifting free books to young children as part of a broader lineup of festive activities. Specifically, any child under five years old who registers with the library between 1 December 2025 and Christmas Eve will be given a complimentary book bag containing a carefully selected book. This initiative is available at all 13 branch libraries managed by Liverpool City Council, as well as at the Liverpool Central Library located in the city center.
In addition to the free book offer, Liverpool Central Library is organizing numerous free events throughout December with families and children in mind. One such event is the weekly Story Time session, which takes place during term time every Tuesday from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm. While it is particularly geared towards children under five, kids of all ages are welcome to join in the singing, actions, and enjoyment of familiar nursery rhymes and stories.
There are also themed activities such as the “Ho Ho Ho! – Christmas Crafts for Kids,” held every Thursday from 27 November to 18 December between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm. On Saturday 6 December at 1:00 pm, a humorous rendition of Charles Dickens’ *A Christmas Carol* will be performed by the Booster Cushion Theatre. This performance, suitable for audiences aged five and up, features a large pop-up book, audience participation, and incorporates mime, voice, and sign language, along with festive touches like humbugs and snow.
Furthermore, an interesting attraction available through January 2026 during library hours is the Matilda Chair, loaned by Liverpool Empire Theatre. Fans of the musical and literature can have their photographs taken in Miss Trunchbull’s iconic chair, notable for its impressive size (4 feet wide and 12 feet high) and the more than 200 hours spent creating it. For teenagers aged 13 to 17, a Positive Pathways Youth Event is scheduled for Friday 19 December from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm in the Discover library. This event will provide educational resources on drug and alcohol awareness and safer sex, alongside arts and crafts, party food, and karaoke to create a supportive and engaging environment for young people
