Sir Richard Branson has expressed profound sorrow following the passing of his wife, Joan, at the age of 80. The couple, married since 1989, shared a life together that included raising three children and welcoming five grandchildren. In an emotional Instagram post, Branson described Joan as not only his “best friend” but also his “guiding light.”
Although the cause of Joan’s death was not disclosed, Sir Richard conveyed his grief by stating, “Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away.” He further added, “She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. Love you forever, Joan x.” Their marriage took place on Necker Island, Branson’s Caribbean estate. The couple had three children: Holly, Sam, and Clare Sarah, with the latter sadly passing away shortly after birth.
Their son Sam paid a touching tribute to his mother, describing her as “the kindest, most loving, warm and abundantly generous woman to walk this Earth.” He also expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am so deeply grateful to have had the privilege of being your son and being able to call you mum.” Joan’s warmth and generosity clearly left a lasting impact on her family.
Reflecting on Joan’s background, their daughter Holly once shared in a blog that her mother grew up in central Glasgow and worked first in a pawnbroker’s shop and later at a bric-a-brac store in West London’s Portobello Road. Holly recalled how her father fell for Joan while she was working there, admitting he “turned up at the shop every day for months, buying stuff he didn’t want or need.” Holly also described Joan as a devoted stay-at-home mother who was always there with “a hug, inspiring words of wisdom, and a beautiful, welcoming smile.” Sir Richard himself once wrote that he “fell for Joan almost from the moment I saw her,” praising her as a steady source of wisdom who influenced many of his life’s important decisions. Throughout his career, Branson became known as a hugely successful entrepreneur, founding Virgin Records in the 1970s and growing his business empire to include ventures in air travel, broadband, and even space tourism
