Newcastle attempted murder investigation sees eight men arrested

Eight individuals have been detained following a violent incident that seriously injured two people in their 60s. The attack occurred at a residence on Durham Street in the Elswick area of Newcastle, with emergency services called to the scene around 18:45 GMT on Friday evening after reports of an assault on a man and a woman.

The two victims were transported to hospital, where the woman remains critically ill due to a head injury, while the man is reported to be in a stable condition. Initially, Northumbria Police arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of attempted murder. Since then, seven additional arrests have been made, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to eight.

Among those detained, four men aged from their 20s to their 40s face charges related to attempted murder. Another man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, while two more men, in their 40s and 60s, are suspected of assisting an offender. All remain held by police as the investigation continues.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton confirmed that a police cordon would stay in place at the scene for some time. He urged the public to refrain from speculation and emphasized, “We have zero tolerance for violence, and we will do all we can to get answers for the loved ones of both victims.” Authorities are also appealing for any information regarding a stolen vehicle, a red Renault Twingo, which was reportedly parked in Newcastle’s West End between 18:30 and 20:00 GMT on the evening of the incident and was later found in Longbenton on Saturday morning
