Two young men facing allegations of hacking into Transport for London’s computer systems have pleaded not guilty at Southwark Crown Court. The defendants, 19-year-old Thalha Jubair from East London and 18-year-old Owen Flowers from Walsall in the West Midlands, confirmed their identities and entered their pleas during a brief court appearance.
Both Jubair and Flowers are accused of conspiracy to carry out unauthorised actions targeting TfL under the Computer Misuse Act. Additionally, Flowers faces charges related to attempted hacks of computer networks belonging to Sutter Health, based in California, and another American firm, SSM Healthcare Corporation. Jubair is also charged with refusing to provide passwords for his electronic devices.
Transport for London reported that the cyberattack inflicted £39 million in damages and disrupted various TfL online services and information displays for approximately three months in the autumn of 2024. While the transport operations themselves were not impacted, the hack affected thousands of customers, prompting TfL to notify them about potential unauthorised access to sensitive data such as bank account numbers and sort codes. Personal details including names, email addresses, and home addresses were also compromised.
During the hearing, Judge Christopher Hehir scheduled the trial to begin on 8 June next year, with an expected duration of four to six weeks. Both men remain in custody as the legal proceedings continue
