Barry Island home of Doris in Gavin and Stacey bought by fans

A devoted fan of the TV series Gavin and Stacey has shared her experience of purchasing one of the show’s most iconic homes. Lisa Molloy, 42, along with her husband Chris, recently acquired the house featured as Doris’s residence on Barry Island’s Trinity Street. Lisa recalls the moment she discovered the listing online as almost unbelievable, admitting she had to do a double take when she saw the address of the familiar two-bedroom terrace, famously inhabited by the sharp-tongued, salad-refusing neighbour of Gwen and Stacey.

The couple, who traveled 130 miles from Tamworth, Staffordshire, were the first to view the property in July and completed the purchase within 48 hours, paying just over the asking price of £220,000. Intent on preserving the show’s authentic atmosphere, they also paid extra to keep the original fixtures and furniture, including curtains, cushions, and wallpaper, maintaining the look fans remember from the series. Lisa expressed their excitement about owning such a piece of British television history, stating, “We’re massive fans and we were fortunate enough to be able to buy the property and feel very privileged and honoured to own it,” adding, “To be able to own the original furniture was the cherry on top of the cake for us.”

The character of Doris, portrayed by the late Margaret John, was well-loved by viewers as the cheeky neighbour of the West family. Following John’s passing in 2011, the show included a storyline where Doris bequeathed the house to Gavin and Stacey. As fans might recall, Doris was famous for her memorable one-liners, especially her refusal to make a salad for Neil’s christening. Joanna Page, who played Stacey, once called working with Margaret John “one of the highlights of Gavin and Stacey” and admired how the character got “bigger and worse and saucier and sexier” as the series progressed.

Lisa and her family, longtime viewers of the series since its inception in 2008, feel privileged to own the home that featured heavily in the 2019 Christmas special. They have taken great care to preserve the place, even obtaining paint codes to maintain the walls for the future. Although the kitchen has been refurbished in accordance with Stacey’s onscreen wishes, many original details remain, including the kettle and toaster. The couple purchased the house with their eldest daughter in mind, who is also a fan of the show, but plan to use it as a holiday rental while she finishes her studies. The excitement of living in a property rich with such TV history remains alive in the family, who sometimes find themselves marveling, “Oh my god, Larry Lamb has sat on this sofa.”
