In Speke, a new woodland play trail has been created to encourage outdoor activity among families, thanks to a collaboration between Liverpool City Council and All Saints Church. This innovative project has revitalized the wooded area around the church and cemetery, turning it into an engaging environment meant to inspire play, discovery, and a sense of community connection.
Funding for the initiative came from Section 106 contributions, allowing the transformation of this green space into an interactive trail. Local children were heavily involved in designing the area, contributing their ideas through the School Council of Stockton Wood Primary School. Key figures in supporting and promoting the project included Headteacher Justine Clovis and Reverend Phil Saltmarsh, the Rector of All Saints Church, who played vital roles in encouraging participation from neighbours and community members.
Artisan chainsaw carver Andrew Burgess from Knutsford crafted unique carvings and bespoke furniture that adorn the trail, while landscape architect Elaine Cresswell from reShaped Ltd helped bring the project to fruition. Other important contributors were Jackie Evans, Community Streetscene Officer for South Liverpool, along with Councillor Mary Rasmussen, who represents Speke on the city council.
The trail was officially opened on Thursday, 13 November, with students from Stockton Wood Primary School joining Reverend Saltmarsh and Councillor Rasmussen to cut the ribbon. Approximately 100 local residents attended the event, celebrating the new vibrant addition to their community. This project exemplifies the impact of strong partnerships between local authorities, schools, community groups, and faith organisations in creating inclusive and welcoming spaces. Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Streetscene, praised the trail as “a brilliant example of community collaboration in action,” while Councillor Mary Rasmussen expressed her excitement by saying, “Wow! How cool is our wonderful Woodland Trail? Well done to everyone involved, but a special thank you must go to our children from Stockton Wood School who came up with fantastic ideas, especially the hidden den for Mr Fox.”
