Two activists known for their pro-Palestinian stance have successfully overturned previous convictions of harassing a government minister. Ayeshah Behit, aged 31, and Hiba Ahmed, 26, had been found guilty in June of harassing Alex Davies-Jones, the Labour MP for Pontypridd, resulting in conditional discharges and fines. The convictions followed an incident during which the pair recorded a confrontation with the MP over issues related to the Gaza conflict.
The case was revisited at Cardiff Crown Court this week, where Behit and Ahmed contested their convictions, arguing that their conduct was protected as free speech. Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke ruled that the prosecution was unnecessary, especially since less severe alternatives had not been considered before the court case.
