Newport man knocked out by electric bike in 'brutal' hit-and-run

A man in Newport was struck by an electric bike in a hit-and-run incident that left him unconscious, only discovering the details two days later after a neighbour’s CCTV footage revealed what had happened. Sam Bevan, 33, from St Julian’s, has no memory of the collision which took place on 11 November, causing him a severe concussion and facial injuries. The shocking footage showed the electric bike rider speeding the wrong way down a one-way street without lights before colliding with Mr Bevan.

Mr Bevan had just gone outside to check on his car after putting his dinner in the oven when the incident occurred. He had no awareness of the crash until he woke up several minutes later on Fairoak Avenue with cuts and scrapes on his face. “My stepfather was asking me my son’s birthday and I couldn’t remember. I was slightly upset at that, it was overwhelming,” he reflected. After the episode, he attended Grange Hospital in Cwmbran, where doctors expressed concern, advising him that he couldn’t drive for six months and that he would require heart and brain tests.

Two days after the accident, neighbours approached Mr Bevan to check on his wellbeing and informed him they had helped him following the collision. They also revealed that CCTV footage existed, which captured the moment he was hit by the electric bike. The video showed him being struck with considerable force and left lying in the street for several minutes as the rider fled the scene. “People have told me it’s brutal,” said Mr Bevan, who remains off work for four weeks while recovering. He expressed gratitude that the outcome wasn’t worse, noting, “It could have been really serious, if that could have been a child, an old person, someone with a smaller frame – I was quite lucky.”

The fact that he was left on the road without assistance particularly upset Mr Bevan. “There was the potential for someone not to see me – was I OK, was I seriously hurt?” he said. “That’s what’s annoyed me, the disrespect and not being humane and checking up on someone.” Living on the street for 12 years, he also called for stricter enforcement against the misuse of electric bikes in the area. “I imagine they are going to be on lots of people’s Christmas lists this year – I just hope people seeing this accident will take a second look at buying them for their kids,” he added. Gwent Police are investigating the incident and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward
