Teenager's death at Barry Island funfair a mystery, inquest hears

An inquest has commenced into the death of 16-year-old Taha Ali Soomro, who passed away at Barry Island Pleasure Park in May. The incident occurred on 23 May when emergency services were called after Taha, a resident of Grangetown in Cardiff, experienced a suspected seizure followed by a cardiac arrest. Despite efforts by paramedics at the scene, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Following the incident, a 15-year-old boy, also from Grangetown, was taken into custody on suspicion of assault in connection with Taha’s death. This young individual was subsequently released on bail while investigations continued. At this stage, the definitive cause of Taha Ali Soomro’s death has not been established.

A post-mortem examination carried out at Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales failed to determine the exact cause of death. Andrew Morse, the assistant coroner for South Wales Central, confirmed that the cause remains unclear, and as a result, the inquest at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court has been adjourned to a later date.

The amusement park issued a statement following the tragedy, expressing that their staff “did their best to assist the emergency services but, unfortunately, the boy suffered a medical emergency and could not be saved.” They also extended their condolences by saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time.” In response to the event, South Wales Police launched a significant investigation and appealed to anyone present at the park around 5 pm on that Friday to come forward, particularly requesting any mobile phone footage related to the incident
