A company faces legal action following the electrocution death of a five-a-side football player at a leisure facility in 2016. Albert Xhediku, 34 years old, suffered a fatal electric shock from a floodlight while retrieving a football at the Mountbatten centre in Portsmouth. The Health and Safety Executive has charged Parkwood Community Leisure Ltd, the operator of the pitch at that time, with failing to safeguard the public. The company is scheduled to appear before Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on 4 December.
On 17 January, Mr. Xhediku, who worked as a taxi driver, was enjoying a game with his friends. When their football went out of bounds, he climbed a fence to collect it. During this, he came into contact with a floodlight, which resulted in the electrical shock, as established during an earlier inquest. Attempts by his friends, who themselves suffered shocks while trying to pull him to safety, to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Mr. Xhediku later died in hospital that same evening.
Family members of Mr. Xhediku shared a heartfelt statement about him, saying: “Albert was a guy who did everything with all his heart. Even when he was just playing football with his friends, he played like it was the championships. He was our big brother and a loving son.” Their words highlight the loss felt by those close to him following the tragic accident.
The case underscores concerns about safety standards at public recreational facilities. The Health and Safety Executive’s action reflects an effort to hold Parkwood Community Leisure Ltd accountable for the incident, ensuring that similar tragedies may be prevented in the future. The upcoming court appearance will determine the company’s legal responsibilities regarding the safety failures that led to Mr. Xhediku’s death
