Liverpool residents are being encouraged to come together and extend their generosity to ensure that vulnerable young people in the city have gifts to open this Christmas. The Liverpool City Council has initiated its annual Christmas Gift Appeal, inviting members of the public and council employees alike to contribute donations for young adults transitioning out of the care system.
This campaign focuses on care leavers, individuals aged between 18 and 25 who were previously under the care of the local authority. These young people are now receiving support as they move towards independent living but often lack family support during the festive season. The appeal is designed to guarantee that every care leaver receives at least one present to brighten their holiday.
To facilitate donations, the appeal is managed through an Amazon Wish List, making it simple and accessible for people to participate. Donors can select from a variety of items, some starting at just £3, and all contributions will be wrapped and distributed by council staff in advance of Christmas. The deadline for giving is Monday, 8 December.
Councillor Liz Parsons, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, highlighted the importance of the appeal, stating, “Due to their childhood experiences, often Care Leavers have limited contact with their family or do not have biological family members who are able to buy them gifts and Christmas time can be a lonely time for some. Please help us to share some Christmas spirit by enabling all our Care Leavers to receive a gift at Christmas this year. It’s easy to donate. Just click on the item in the Amazon wish list that you wish to donate and don’t forget to select the gift registry address Rachael Burke, Care Leavers team.”
