WW2 veteran Norman Irwin celebrates 107th birthday and is NI's oldest man

A remarkable celebration recently took place for Norman Irwin, a World War Two veteran who has reached the impressive age of 107. Considered likely to be the oldest man in Northern Ireland, Mr Irwin marked his birthday at his care home near Coleraine, County Londonderry, surrounded by family, friends, and military representatives. Despite the attention, he modestly remarked, “It seems a lot of fuss over nothing.” During the war, he served across eight different countries and was instrumental in safeguarding the Suez Canal from German forces.

Reflecting on his experiences, Mr Irwin emphasized the lasting impact of the camaraderie shared among soldiers during those wartime years. Born in 1918, he has witnessed dramatic transformations in the world, noting, “It is very difficult to get a handle on the world nowadays. It’s difficult to know where it’s going. It is changing so rapidly and it will keep on changing rapidly.” His outlook on life includes advice for younger generations: “Take it as it comes and do your best and be kind to everybody on your way up because you might meet them on your way down.”

Earlier in the year, Mr Irwin received a British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of his voluntary contributions to his community, including work at a cross-community club for retirees. He credits his longevity to whiskey, a passion acknowledged when The Corps of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers presented him with a bottle engraved with his military service number. This gift symbolized not only his remarkable years but also the respect he has earned.

Chris Irwin, Norman’s grandson, expressed deep admiration for his grandfather. He shared, “I can’t believe he’s 107 and still going strong. He’s got such zest for life…he’s a witty character and such fun to be around.” Recounting a recent moment, Chris added, “The other day he dropped his wallet on the floor and by the time I’d even thought about it he’d picked it up and put it in his pocket.” Proud and honored, Chris looks forward to celebrating Norman’s 108th birthday, grateful for the enduring vitality and spirit his grandfather continues to display
