A tragic incident involving a family’s XL bully dog has resulted in the death of a nine-month-old infant, whose identity was revealed during the commencement of an inquest. Jonte William Bluck suffered fatal injuries after being bitten by the dog while he was at his father’s residence in Crossway, Rogiet, Monmouthshire, on 2 November 2025.
The inquest into Jonte’s death began at Gwent Coroner’s Court on Monday; however, it has been adjourned until August 2026 to allow ongoing police investigations to proceed. Preliminary findings indicate that the cause of death was a compressive head injury, which aligns with injuries consistent with a dog bite.
Area coroner Rose Farmer provided details about the case, stating, “Jonte William Bluck sadly passed away on the 2nd of November 2025 at his home address. The brief circumstances are that on the 2nd of November he was staying at the home of his father when he was bitten by the family dog. He was conveyed to the Grange University Hospital but died prior to arrival. An inquest has been opened as there is reason to suspect that he died as a result of a dog bite.”
In connection with this case, a man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s from Rogiet were arrested on suspicion of child neglect and for being responsible for a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death. Both individuals were subsequently released on police bail. It is noted that the six-year-old male XL bully had been registered with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and was issued a certificate of exemption in 2024 before being put down following the incident
