After more than five weeks of being missing, the body of Matthias Beutin, a 57-year-old German hiker, was found on the Isle of Skye. Police Scotland confirmed that his remains were located near Coire Dubh, Blaven, at approximately 14:15 on Saturday. Authorities have stated that the death is currently being treated as unexplained, but there is no suspicion of foul play.
Matthias Beutin was last observed at the Blaven car park by Loch Slapin on October 9th before embarking on his climb of Blà Bheinn, a mountain also known as Blaven. The ascent took place in a remote area of Skye, on the edge of the Cullin Ridge, an area popular among walkers and climbers. Despite being a well-liked hiking destination, the terrain around Blà Bheinn is known for its difficulty.
During the extensive search operations, several rescue teams encountered adverse conditions, including challenging terrain and poor visibility. Skye Mountain Rescue described these difficulties while actively searching for Mr. Beutin. Additional support came from the Search and Rescue Dog Association, Kintail Mountain Rescue, and the Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service, all of whom contributed to the multi-agency efforts to locate him.
Police Scotland has informed the family of Matthias Beutin about the discovery. The incident remains under review, with investigators noting that no suspicious circumstances are currently linked to his death.
