Leah Matthews, a mother of two, now faces the challenge of relearning how to walk after suffering a serious fall from a cliff at a popular scenic spot. On 4 October, Leah and her partner Anthony took their dogs for a walk in mid Wales’ Waterfall Country. During their outing, Leah accidentally fell around 40 meters (130 feet) from a cliff into a river, resulting in critical injuries that required her to be airlifted to hospital for emergency surgery.

Leah described the fall as “never ending” and called her survival a “miracle,” recalling moments when she feared she wouldn’t make it.
After landing in the Nant Llech river, Leah found herself struggling to breathe and stay conscious as her partner Anthony called out to her. Unable to reach her immediately, Anthony tied one dog to a tree and then scrambled down to her side. Displaying remarkable determination, he managed to pull Leah from the water and place her in the recovery position before receiving guidance over the phone to keep her alert. Leah fondly referred to his efforts as “Tarzan-like” for the way he navigated the terrain to get help.
Rescue teams, including the police, fire service, mountain rescue, and paramedics, worked together for five hours to safely move Leah to a position where she could be airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales. There, doctors discovered she had sustained eight broken ribs, a shattered hip, three pelvic fractures, a fractured foot, and a punctured lung. The recovery process has been arduous, involving two surgeries and multiple blood transfusions. Leah has since been
