Reform UK has taken the decision to expel a councillor who was previously suspended following an internal investigation linked to the unauthorized leaking of a video from a contentious virtual meeting. Isabella Kemp, a member of Kent County Council (KCC), was initially suspended by the party but has now been removed entirely after the party concluded she was involved in breaching confidentiality. According to Reform UK, their probe revealed that Kemp created a WhatsApp group where the possibility of screen recording the meeting was discussed, and she allegedly encouraged a colleague to be dishonest concerning a vote of no confidence.
Kemp vehemently denies these accusations, asserting that those expelled were actually the ones who had voiced significant concerns about the operations within KCC. She expressed strong denial of the claims against her and offered to undergo forensic analysis on her phone and laptop to clear her name, though she states that the offer was turned down. Kemp believes her removal stems from her dedication to advocating for transparency and integrity within the Reform party.
The leaked video, which was published by The Guardian, featured the Reform UK leader at KCC, Linden Kemkaran, engaging in aggressive behavior, including swearing and shouting during a council meeting. In the footage, Kemkaran can be heard telling party members to “suck it up” in relation to her decisions. Despite the controversy, Kemkaran has decided not to resign, and the national party leader, Nigel Farage, has publicly expressed full support for her leadership.
Initially, five councillors were expelled after the leak emerged. Among them was Maxine Fothergill, who was suspended amid suspicions connected to the leak but has since been expelled on different grounds—specifically for not disclosing “a serious matter” during the vetting process. Reform UK stated that there was not enough evidence to implicate Fothergill in the leak itself. Fothergill has consistently denied involvement and condemned the party’s decision to expel her without a hearing or evidence disclosure, calling it a breach of Reform UK’s own constitution. She has announced her intention to take legal action against the party. Notably, Reform UK, which secured 57 out of 81 council seats in May, took control of KCC after decades of Conservative dominance but have since seen their numbers dwindle to 46 councillors following these expulsions
