Pair admit murdering man in Greenock over mistaken identity

Two men are facing the prospect of life imprisonment following the death of Michael Beaton, 35, in Inverclyde due to a tragic case of mistaken identity. On the evening of 26 November 2023, in Greenock, Beaton was struck by a car driven by 21-year-old Richard Mullan and subsequently stabbed by 27-year-old Alexander McQuillan. The High Court in Glasgow uncovered that the original target that night was McQuillan himself, not Beaton.

The sequence of events unraveled during a pursuit when Mullan, aiming at McQuillan, collided with Beaton, who was trying to reach McQuillan. While Beaton lay gravely injured on the road, McQuillan attacked him with a machete. Despite emergency surgery at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, Beaton succumbed to his injuries later that day.
