Results of Liverpool’s Accelerator City decarbonisation programme to be showcased at EXPEDITION TWO

Liverpool marked a significant milestone a year ago by becoming the United Nations’ inaugural Accelerator City for Climate Action. This initiative focuses on pioneering efforts to reduce carbon emissions within the live music, film, and television industries, approaching the challenge from a whole-city perspective. The program, which received significant backing from Ecotricity as its headline partner, commenced with the launch of Expedition One in November 2024, an event driven by industry leaders that established a framework for sustainable cultural industries on a global scale.

Yesterday, during the COP30 climate conference held in Belem, Brazil, representatives from Liverpool updated attendees on the progress made throughout the year. Through a ninety-minute remote presentation from the UK, they discussed how Accelerator City has been working collaboratively to develop actionable strategies for greener cultural production practices. Following this, Liverpool extended an invitation to key stakeholders—including industry executives, city officials, creative professionals, and climate advocates—to join EXPEDITION TWO, a gathering designed to present the outcomes from twelve months of pilot projects and experimental approaches.

Set to take place at ACC Liverpool on Friday, 28 November, EXPEDITION TWO aims to both celebrate successful prototypes and set a clear direction for advancing sustainable practices throughout the city’s cultural sectors and beyond. This event will highlight the results of the initial Accelerator Pilots, introduce the leading decarbonisation prototypes suitable for broad application in live events and screen production, and reveal a comprehensive city-wide toolkit created to accelerate climate action within creative industries.

Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram and Liverpool City Council Leader Cllr Liam Robinson are scheduled to speak at the event, outlining the next phase following a year of dedicated experimentation. Attendees will also gain insights from key industry partners instrumental in shaping and delivering the pilot initiatives throughout 2025. Additionally, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will present on Liverpool’s trailblazing role as an Accelerator City, sharing valuable lessons for future cities undertaking similar climate action journeys. Reflecting on the progress, Cllr Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, emphasized the impact of collaboration: “Over the past year, our city has shown the power of collaboration between local government, creative industries, and community groups to drive real progress towards net zero. Sharing these pilot results and blueprints will not only help Liverpool cut emissions from live events and screen production but will also inspire other cities to follow our lead. This summit marks a pivotal moment in our journey – proving that when we come together, a sustainable, decarbonised future for Liverpool is within reach.”
