Exeter City Football Club investigation after fire at stadium

A fire broke out at Exeter City’s home ground, St James Park, leading to some damage and prompting an official investigation. The incident occurred late Wednesday evening when smoke was spotted coming from a portacabin situated near the Well Street end of the stadium. Firefighters from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue responded promptly to the scene around 22:00 GMT.

The origin of the fire was traced back to an electrical unit, which then ignited a temporary building on site. According to the fire service, this building contained the club’s control room. Fire crews worked diligently using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to prevent the blaze from spreading further, particularly to one of the stadium’s stands. Additional firefighting crews were called in as the situation developed, with a total of five teams ultimately responding.

By midnight, the fire had been fully extinguished, and ventilation fans were deployed to clear the lingering smoke. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Exeter City’s officials expressed gratitude to the members of the public who alerted the authorities and praised the fire crews for their rapid and effective response which helped contain the damage. The club stated that they would conduct an assessment of the damage and provide updates when more information became available.

This is not the first time a fire has affected Exeter City’s stadium. A similar incident occurred in 2016 when the old Stagecoach stand caught fire, resulting in a game delay of over an hour. Since then, that stand has been replaced with the Adam Stansfield stand, which remains unaffected by the current incident. The fire service confirmed that a full investigation will be carried out during daylight hours to determine the exact circumstances of the fire
