Laura Anne Jones, the only Senedd member representing Reform, is facing a two-week suspension due to offensive remarks she made in a WhatsApp chat. In August 2023, Jones used a racial slur to describe Chinese people, for which she later apologized. The Senedd’s standards committee recommended the suspension, stating that such comments have no place in the Senedd or society as a whole.
The investigation, led by the Senedd’s standards commissioner, Douglas Bain, considered multiple allegations against Jones, including racist comments and failure to address discriminatory behavior. Jones, previously a Conservative Member of the Senedd (MS), switched to Reform in July. The committee’s report highlighted Jones’ inappropriate comments and noted her acceptance of wrongdoing and subsequent apology.
In one instance, Jones made derogatory remarks in a WhatsApp group conversation, referring to Chinese individuals as “chinky spies.” Additionally, she used offensive language to describe a former employee, failing to address the disrespectful behavior within her office. The standards committee found that Jones had breached multiple conduct rules and demonstrated a lack of respect towards others.
The Senedd will vote on the proposed 14-day suspension for Jones in the upcoming week. Plaid Cymru condemned Jones’ language as vile and unacceptable, emphasizing the need for consequences for elected representatives. While Jones was cleared of fraudulent expense claims, she has repaid incorrectly claimed money.
