Sami Hamdi to be freed from US immigration detention

Sami Hamdi, a British journalist, is soon to be released from US custody following his detainment by immigration enforcement, as confirmed by his family on Monday. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Hamdi, a media commentator known for his criticism of Israel, while he was in the US for a speaking tour, alleging that he supports terrorism and poses a national security threat. On the other hand, Hamdi’s legal team contends that he was targeted solely for speaking out against Israel and its actions in Gaza. He is expected to be released from ICE detention in the coming days and will be returning to the UK.

During his visit to the US to speak at events for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim advocacy group, Hamdi was apprehended by ICE officers at San Francisco International Airport on October 26. His detention was a result of the US government revoking his visa and facing criticism from far-right activist Laura Loomer, a supporter of former President Trump, who accused him of backing terrorist activities. The State Department previously stated that the US is not obligated to harbor individuals who support terrorism, emphasizing the importance of national safety. Discussions with the State Department, ICE, and DHS are ongoing to finalize the details of Hamdi’s release.

Representatives for Hamdi and the California chapter of CAIR have expressed satisfaction with the arrangement allowing Hamdi to voluntarily return to the UK rather than facing deportation. They have highlighted that he was targeted for his criticism of Israel’s actions against Palestinians and pointed out that the immigration charging document against him only mentions overstaying his visa. According to CAIR, no criminal activities or security concerns were presented, indicating that Hamdi did not pose a threat to the community or national security. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has been providing consular assistance to Hamdi and his family, while expressing joy over his impending release but also acknowledging the distress caused by his unjust detention and the allegations against him in the US
