Jayne Cook and Freya Kendrick, both members of Liverpool City Council’s Public Health Team, are embarking on a unique challenge called ‘Race for a Reason’ with Alfie’s Squad. This initiative aims to offer support to children and young individuals who have endured the loss of a loved one due to suicide. The race will take place from November 14th to 16th, starting at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium and ending at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge ground. The duo will encounter various secret checkpoints and challenges throughout their journey.
Expressing their excitement for the upcoming event, Jayne and Freya stated, “It’s going to be a fun weekend using public transport, our imagination, and possibly a couple of favors to get us to the finish line! Along the way, we will be relying on public transport and potentially a few lifts if we are lucky with a limited budget. If you think you could help us out a bit, perhaps someone has a connection with Network Rail or Arriva/Stagecoach and would like to lend us a favor by getting us a pass for the day.”
Alfie’s Squad, founded by Alfie who tragically lost his father to suicide at a young age of 8, was established to offer support to individuals facing similar challenges. Officially launched in 2023, Alfie’s Squad is recognized as the only charity in the UK that provides in-person peer support for children, youth (aged 6-17), and their families coping with the aftermath of suicide. Each week, about 50 young members participate in engaging activities that help them enhance their confidence and foster friendships.
Contributions made toward Alfie’s Squad will enable the organization to continue providing crucial support to young members and extending its reach to more families during their most vulnerable moments. Follow the Instagram account @alfiessquad for updates, as you may be called upon to assist in helping them reach the finish line.
