McDonald’s has agreed to implement new measures to tackle sexual harassment after facing serious allegations of abuse within its workforce. The fast-food chain reached an agreement with the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to provide enhanced sexual harassment training for managers. The move comes in response to allegations of groping and harassment raised by employees, some as young as 17, as reported in a BBC investigation two years ago.
In addition to the new training, McDonald’s has committed to addressing the grooming of young workers and the use of social media in its sexual harassment prevention efforts. The EHRC has mandated the establishment of an external body to review the handling of harassment claims within the company. The EHRC has received reports of 300 incidents of harassment, leading to further concerns about the lack of progress in addressing workplace misconduct at McDonald’s.
Baroness Kishwer Falkner, chairwoman of the EHRC, commended the steps taken by McDonald’s but emphasized the need for continuous improvement to ensure a safe working environment for all staff members. The company will collaborate with external experts to develop a new safeguarding plan aimed at protecting vulnerable employees. Efforts to strengthen risk assessments and encourage staff to report any inappropriate behavior are also part of the new measures agreed upon between McDonald’s and the EHRC
