Botox and Mounjaro comprehensive review needed, says Wales' regulator

Lizzie Day had always thought of Botox as just another routine part of her life, much like grabbing a morning coffee. It wasn’t until a doctor friend expressed concerns about a “fat-dissolving” treatment she was using that she began to question what she was putting into her body. Up until then, the 30-year-old recruitment consultant had been quick to jump on the bandwagon of the latest aesthetic treatments buzzing on social media platforms. The Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) believes a thorough review is necessary to assess the types of services available, who provides them, and where they are provided.

“When I was getting these treatments, I had no clue about what was actually being injected into me,” Lizzie confessed. She highlighted how trendy treatments often gain popularity like fashion trends, with everyone following suit without fully understanding the risks involved. In contrast to England, where only registered healthcare professionals can prescribe Botox or weight-loss injections, in Wales, only doctors are required to register with HIW, leaving room for other healthcare professionals to provide these services without the same rigorous standards.

Living in Manchester, Lizzie had grown accustomed to commonplace procedures like fillers and Botox.
