A company known for its salmon farming operations on the Isle of Skye has recently had its Royal Warrant revoked following allegations of animal cruelty. Mowi Scotland, previously granted the Royal Warrant in December of last year, was suspended from an RSPCA welfare scheme in May after videos emerged showing “systemic cruelty” towards the fish. The Royal Warrant, which allows a company to supply the Royal Household, had been held by Mowi for 35 years.
The Green Britain Foundation, an animal rights group, captured footage at Mowi’s farm in Loch Harport, showing disturbing scenes of cruelty towards the salmon. According to the footage, the fish were subjected to beatings and suffocation, far beyond the accepted animal welfare standards. A live fish is not supposed to be out of water for more than 15 seconds, and dying fish should be instantly rendered insensible with a percussive blow to the head.
In response to the removal of the Royal Warrant, a spokesperson for Mowi Scotland expressed their honor in holding the prestigious recognition but refrained from commenting on the decision made by the Royal Household. The Norwegian-owned company, employing around 1,500 people in Scotland, operates 48 farms producing over 68,000 tonnes of salmon annually. The warrant was initially granted in 1990 to Marine Harvest Scotland, the former name of Mowi.
Companies awarded a Royal Warrant of Appointment are permitted to display the Royal Arms on their products as a mark of acknowledgment for providing goods or services to the Royal Household. Originally granted for up to five years, the warrant may not be renewed if the quality or supply of the product or service does not meet the required standards. More information about the removal of Mowi’s Royal Warrant is yet to be disclosed by the Royal Warrant Holders Association, and a current list of warrant holders does not feature the company. Other notable holders of a Royal Warrant include BT, John Lewis, and Jaguar Land Rover
