Police probe link between street and Huntingdon train attacks

The investigation into a knife attack that resulted in a man sustaining severe facial injuries in September is being re-examined for potential links to recent train stabbings near Huntingdon. Ricky Butcher, 35, was waiting for a taxi outside the Fletton Club in Peterborough when he was confronted by a man wielding a knife. Cambridgeshire Police are exploring whether this attack is connected to a mass stabbing on a train near Huntingdon, as well as an assault at a station in Silvertown, east London, both occurring on the same Saturday.

Anthony Williams, 32, has been charged with 11 counts of attempted murder in relation to the Huntingdon and London attacks and has been held in custody. In addition, Williams has been associated with the stabbing of a 14-year-old boy in Peterborough city center, along with two incidents at a local barber’s shop where a man was seen brandishing a knife. Despite this, Butcher expressed disappointment with the initial police response to his attack, emphasizing his discontent with the investigation being dropped abruptly despite multiple witnesses present at the scene.

Following Butcher’s complaint and the subsequent reopening of the investigation into his attack, Cambridgeshire Police self-referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the city center and barber shop assaults. While the IOPC declined to investigate further, Daryl Preston, the Conservative police and crime commissioner for Cambridgeshire, has called for an internal review. British Transport Police (BTP) is leading the inquiry into the train stabbings and has indicated that any incidents connected to these events before 31 October fall under the jurisdiction of the local police force. The stabbings have left four individuals hospitalized, including Samir Zitouni, 48, a railway staff member who has been commended for his actions in safeguarding passengers during the attacks and is currently in critical condition but stable
