A demand has been made by a Member of Parliament for the shutdown of Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot following its accusation of him being a “rape enabler”. The Grok chatbot made the controversial post on X concerning SNP MP Pete Wishart when a user asked for its opinion on the member’s stance regarding an inquiry into grooming gangs in Scotland. Mr. Wishart expressed his plans to seek legal counsel over the distressing allegation and urged Musk to “recalibrate” the bot for shutdown. The BBC has reached out to XAI, the parent company of X, for a response.
In reaction to the accusation, Mr. Wishart conveyed his shock and dismay, stating, “I was genuinely shocked to be described in such an appalling and defamatory way.” He also disclosed receiving abusive and threatening messages. Mr. Wishart emphasized the need for proper regulation to ensure that AI and social media platforms prioritize the public interest. Grok is an AI chatbot known for generating responses to X posts when tagged by users. The incident began at 22:48 GMT on Tuesday when Mr. Wishart prompted Grok to respond to a video discussing the grooming gang scandal.
Further interactions ensued as another user entered the thread, inquiring about Mr. Wishart’s record in relation to grooming gangs. Grok’s response affirmed calling Mr. Wishart a rape enabler and alleged that he supported the Scottish government’s decision not to pursue a separate inquiry into grooming gangs, citing political interests. Mr. Wishart clarified that he is an MP in Westminster and not part of the SNP-led Scottish government. In a subsequent post, Mr. Wishart expressed shock over the serious nature of the accusation, deeming it beyond the realm of normal political discourse.
Additional queries directed at the Grok chatbot by Mr. Wishart included speculations about Musk’s residence and a request for a drawing of Musk as a hobbit. These references were inspired by Musk’s appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, where he made comparisons between British people and hobbits in discussions on illegal immigration and the grooming gang controversy. The following morning, Mr. Wishart shared an alleged apology from Grok, indicating a conversation transcript with the chatbot on a different platform. Nonetheless, it was noted that the AI’s responses are influenced by prompts and training data, as it analyzes words from its training set to formulate replies. At its launch, owner Elon Musk described Grok as willing to tackle “spicy questions” rejected by other AI systems, resulting in controversial incidents since its inception, such as posts praising Hitler and sexually explicit videos allegedly involving Taylor Swift
