Baroness Michelle Mone and her husband Doug Barrowman’s company, PPE Medpro, is facing a significant tax bill of £39m in addition to the £148m it was already ordered to pay the government for failing to meet contract requirements in supplying PPE. The revelation of this sizable debt owed to HMRC was disclosed in documents submitted by PPE Medpro’s administrator.

Following a court ruling last month that found PPE Medpro had breached a contract related to the supply of medical gowns during the height of the Covid pandemic, the company’s financial woes seem to be mounting. Despite the government’s efforts to secure supplies of PPE as the nation grappled with shortages amid the lockdown, PPE Medpro’s shortcomings in meeting certification standards have landed them in this predicament.

In the wake of PPE Medpro being placed into administration, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has affirmed the government’s commitment to aggressively pursue the company in order to recover the substantial sums owed. The company’s available funds for unsecured creditors amount to a mere £672,774, falling considerably short of its outstanding debt obligations to the DHSC.

Baroness Mone’s husband, Doug Barrowman, who maintains ownership of PPE Medpro, admitted in a 2023 interview to having received over £60m in profits from the company. The intricate ownership structure, with shares held by an accountant named Arthur Lancaster, has further complicated the situation. Despite these revelations, representatives for both Barrowman and PPE Medpro have not offered any comments on the matter
