A migrant who had been deported to France under the “one-in, one-out” system before returning to the UK by small boat has once again been deported. The Home Office confirmed that the man, an Iranian national, was on a return flight on Wednesday morning after being removed on 19 September and returning on 18 October. He claimed to have been a victim of modern slavery by smuggling gangs in France.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that the man’s case was expedited after biometric detection and detention. She emphasized that any attempts to return to the UK after being removed under the UK-France agreement would be futile and result in deportation. Mahmood vowed to increase the removal of illegal migrants to safeguard the country’s borders.
The unnamed individual had previously expressed fears for his safety in France and recounted his harrowing experiences at the hands of smugglers. He described being treated as a “worthless object,” forced to work, abused, and threatened with violence. A total of 94 migrants have been removed from the UK under the treaty, with 57 individuals relocated from France.
Critics, including Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, have condemned the government’s handling of the situation, labeling it as chaotic and weak. Maddie Harris, director of Humans for Rights Network, revealed that the Iranian man had suffered severe trauma due to his mistreatment by smugglers.
